What is a back link?
A backlink is any link from a website to another website
Backlinks are an important factor to the search engine algorithm to determine the link popularity of a given site. This goes into the final equation of the trust factor of the domain, the page rank of the domain and to the degree a given web page is going to rank for a given term.
Other factors influence this final factor including 'anchor text' used in the back link. The trust of the site that is providing the link back, other factors can also be the extension of the domain providing the link back, .gov and .edu sites providing a link back is worth more than a .com.au site as they have a higher trust level, thus the link is worth more to the receiving site.
